Explore the ancient technique of batik made popular in Java. Batik uses layers of wax and dye to create colorful designs that can be made into wall hangings, pillow covers, clothing, etc. This class will teach about the history of Batik. Students will learn to use a tjanting tool to create a traditional style batik. You will have the opportunity to use tjaps/stamp blocks and, finally, to use the contemporary method of painting with the dyes.

The first day students will receive a kit of supplies and can complete as many projects as time allows. On the second day, you may choose to create a large mosaic and stretch it onto a frame for hanging or create a good luck banner.
