What is Glass on Glass (GOG) Mosaic Art?

What is Glass on Glass (GOG) Mosaic Art?

Glass on Glass Mosaics is essentially glass, usually stained glass, glued to glass and then grouted, using sanded grout. Mosaics are durable they can be put together to last a lifetime and beyond, if proper steps are taken.

More specifically, what does art mean to me (Kory Dollar); why do I create and teach with such passion?

To me Glass on Glass is my story, my lifeline, my legacy, my drive, and passion.

What makes my teaching style unique?

I have a specific cutting style, rules, and guidelines established to push myself and my students beyond our artistic realm. I will open your eyes to how glass breaks and why it breaks the way it does. I have simple rules to follow and if you want to break them that is okay too! I will teach you process and style, while having a great time and creating epic art. I can explain how and why. I provide excellent visual aid. My teaching style will adapt to any learning style.  I provide hands on, visual aids, verbally express the steps, and provide detailed handouts.

The snow will melt, but this memory will last forever! This photo reminds me of why I love glass on glass. It takes me back to childhood, the creative bonds I established between my parents and the environment. It is the freedom to use any materials around you just to create and it doesn’t have to be good it just needs to be done! Creating art is expressive, healing, and emotional. A gift to understand how using your materials can create life long memories, not just art. Art that disappears can even make the most memorable impact to keep creating in adulthood. From the moment we are born our brain is building synapses that make us happy and art has always done that for me! I believe that because of the artistic environment I grew up in art keeps me happy; it reduces my anxiety, reminds me of wonderful times spent creating from our materials! If the universe gives you snow make a colorful snowman.

What is so different about Glass on Glass Mosaics?

Using the process I have developed, Glass on Glass Art, will out last the test of time. I know that not only am I creating lifetime art, I am inspiring others to leave a healthy artistic footprint behind too.  I teach how to build/create a lifetime piece of fine art. I believe you are only around as long as your memory and that is essentially why I create with such passion. I know my Great Great Great Grandchildren will see my art, making my existence on earth transcending. I want to leave a healthy artistic footprint, to out-stand the test of time; and that is what makes GOG so special to my heart.

I am proud to promote “artistic freedom without self-doubt,” in my students and children. This photo of the best snowman EVER in Lily’s world! It reminds me why I teach my trade to others; Glass on Glass is very powerful; it is a trade I have developed and built throughout my artistic journey,  my life. My work is inspired by tile work, mosaic, sculpture, painting, pottery, woodwork, glass blowing, and my environment I was raised in. I was always at my dad’s hip waiting to create. My mother always talked about designing in odd numbers, numerology, and feng shui in our home. My most cherished possessions are what my father, grandfathers, and children have created. I feel a passion to teach and create, to leave behind my memory, and give my students that gift as well!

GOG is like no other art, not even stained glass. The details and depth can mesmerize me for hours! It is freedom in a cup! Glass on Glass has so many artistic element’s that a painting or any other medium can not offer. GOG is a variation transparent, opaque, iiridized glass, combined with unique elements like texture, reflectivity, illumination, and prismatic colors. Glass on Glass Mosaics have LIFE and can heal the sole! I am proud to say that lifelong friendships are established through our mosaic community and human connections are so important  to promote happiness and build confidence. Glass on Glass Mosaic can also offer an ever-changing piece of illuminated art, essentially changing with the light of the sun.

Photo is of Lily Lathrop, my only niece. My dad, sister, I once made a colored dragon, a snow chair, and many snowmen! Last year, my son and I filled bottles of water and food coloring and had fun splattering the neighborhood!

What skills do you need to attend this workshop? This is a beginning to intermediate level class, where everyone is welcome, including children over 12 years of age. The class size will be limited to 10 students. We will cover basic cutting skills, the process of Glass on Glass mosaics, and give a grout lesson.
What do you need to bring? All tools and supplies will be provided for the class. It is recommended that you bring some unique pieces to add to your mosaic, making it one-or-a-kind. We ask you bring creative mind and a good attitude! Come with an idea NOT a pattern. I do not teach from patterns, we only use them as a guideline. With that in mind, we are not restricted to a pattern, it is okay to go outside the lines and let the glass create its own details. Think SIMPLE! For example; look around your house, do you have a color scheme or a theme you decorate in? We will have some examples and ideas for you.  It is a fast pace class, we will have to commit to a design early Saturday and have most of the piece finished by that evening. I will send out a reminder about design ideas a few weeks before the class, giving you some time to think about it and ask questions. Food is not provided, so we do a potluck style on Saturday and Sunday, Because of the location,  potluck works very well because then we can graze on food all day as we work.

The three day workshop will be a combination of lecture/slideshow, discussion, Q&A, demos, and hands-on instruction. We will focus on Glass on Glass (GOG) application, using the direct method to create a stimulating optical effect. Kory will demo several unique cuts she uses in her roosters and sunflowers, using three tools, nippers, a scoring tool, and running pliers. During this process, you will learn how cut strips to patternize your glass into flowers while maximizing your glass. Kory will demonstrate and discuss a specific nipping style /technique, Glass Shaving® to create a crisp clean edge, using only wheeled nippers to cut the circles. The class will explore how to create movement, in the tail feathers suing long slender cuts.  Additional topics covered include: precision cutting, committing to a design, selecting a color pallet, varying opacity, Randomization Method®, balance and composition, creating a one-of-a-kind designs, and incorporating found and unusual items. Kory will discuss grout bleed, adhesives, grout additives, and provide tips and tricks to grouting. Mac glue will be provided. Students are encouraged to bring additional unique items such as broken jewelry, beads, and tesserae to embellish your mosaic.

There will be a grout demonstration on Sunday. Students are welcome to grout if they have completed the project and glue has dried. If projects are not completed, or dried by 12 pm then a grout package will be available to take home for optional grouting.

Kory notes that she does not strive for perfection; “the art of art is the imperfections.” She says, “It is my goal that I will simplify the process enough to give you ‘artistic freedom without self doubt’. I strive to build confidence in these classes. I do not teach from a pattern, I teach to use your sketch as only a guideline; you are not restricted to the pattern. I will assist you in creating a balanced one-of-a-kind composition, using my uniquely designed simplified steps. We will focus on several unique cuts and I will provide you with tips and tricks that I use daily.”

The goal on Sunday is to have projects ready to be grouted by noon. Grout time is scheduled outside at 2 pm. We will need time for your projects to dry. If you are unable to complete the mosaic in time to grout we will send grouting instructions and a  grouting kit can be sent home.
