3 Day Mosaic Retreat with Kory Dollar of Marvelous Mosaic Fine Art at Deer Island Manor,  May  3, 4, 5,  2019

Each student will walk away with a 15″ x 15″ custom framed mosaic. The substrate will be a new sheet of 1/8 annealed glass in a custom frame

Your Host’s Kory and Diane will fill your weekend with creativity, relaxation, and great food. 

All supplies and materials will be provided. Lodging and meals are included in your package. We will have snack and refreshments available all weekend. There is so much planned! Meet and Greet, Late Night Desert in the Kitchen, High Tea on Saturday, Meditation and Yoga sessions through out the entire weekend, River Hunt, Champagne Brunch on Sunday, The studio will be open till 10 pm. each night.

The three day retreat will be a combination of lecture/slideshow, discussion, Q&A, demos, and hands-on instruction. We will focus on Glass on Glass (GOG) application, using the direct method to create a stimulating optical effect. Kory will demo several unique cuts she uses in her gardens, using three tools, nippers, a scoring tool, and running pliers. During this process, you will learn how cut strips to patternize your glass into flowers while maximizing your glass. Kory will demonstrate and discuss a specific nipping style /technique, Glass Shaving® to create a crisp clean edge, using only wheeled nippers. The class will explore how to create movement, using Kory’s signature cut, One-cut Sliver Cut®. Additional topics covered include: committing to a design, selecting a color pallet, varying opacity, Randomization Method®, balance and composition, creating a one-of-a-kind designs, and incorporating found and unusual items. Kory will discuss grout bleed, adhesives, grout additives, and provide tips and tricks to grouting. Mac glue will be provided. Students are encouraged to bring additional unique items such as broken jewelry, beads, and tesserae to embellish your mosaic.

Advanced Opportunity: We will have several sessions where we will have the opportunity to use a tile saw and cut unique glass tiles, bottles, and a variety of thick materials. Bring a tea-cup, or a bottle with you and we will be cutting unique pieces to add to your mosaic.

There will be a grout demonstration on Sunday. Students are welcome to grout if they have completed the project and glue has dried. If projects are not completed, or dried by 2 pm then a grout package will be available to take home for optional grouting.

Kory notes that she does not strive for perfection; “the art of art is the imperfections.” She says, “It is my goal that I will simplify the process enough to give you ‘artistic freedom without self doubt’. I strive to build confidence in these classes. I do not teach from a pattern, I teach to use your sketch as only a guideline; you are not restricted to the pattern. I will assist you in creating a balanced one-of-a-kind composition, using my uniquely designed simplified steps. We will focus on several unique cuts and I will provide you with tips and tricks that I use daily.”

Cieara Kennedy , a licensed massage therapist will be on staff to provide 15 or 30 min massages with your choice of aroma therapy the cost will be included in your package and scheduled 2 weeks prior to your stay.

This is a time to get settled in it is very informal, Kory is available for one on one conversations and questions. We will have a small private show of Kory’s art on display in the Sanctuary and you are invited to explore the manor and get settled in. Because of the location we expect that there will be people arriving through out the day and no instruction will start before 3 pm.

The goal on Sunday is to have projects ready to be grouted by noon. Grout time is scheduled outside at 2 pm. We will need time for your projects to dry. If you are unable to complete the mosaic in time to grout we will send grouting instructions and a optional grouting kit can be purchased.

Our beautiful master suite is 540 sq. feet of luxury and eclectic beautiful. A private bath and jetted tub awaits you! King sized bed with cozy private sitting area. Large walk in shower in our unique, newly remodeled bathroom. Deer Island Manor is now the private full-time residence of Jason and Lady Diane Dunn.

The space

Deer Island Manor was built in 1908 and served as the local grade school up until 10 years ago. It is on the State’s historical register and sits on the Lewis and Clark trail.

Deer Island Manor is now the private home of Jason and Diane Dunn. They have an eclectic design style that reflects their love of auction and flea market exploring.

The Manor is filled with antique, mid-century and modern finds. Organic vegetable and herb gardens fill the front yard as well as free ranging chickens. Lavender and dahlias are in full bloom!

We have a large gourmet kitchen that may be used by guests. The Great Hall houses an eclectic library, wet bar and art collection as well as a meditation space.

50% deposits will be required to reserve your spot.
Note: If for any reason the class is canceled due to max number of students (6) not reached, or unforeseen reason 100% of the deposits/all payments will be refunded.
If for any reason you need to cancel your reservation, you must do so 45 days prior to the event to get a refund, If you cancel 45 days prior to the event we will process your refund, with a $25 administration fee. After the 45 day deadline, we must fill the spot for you to get a refund, with a $50 administration fee. If you cancel 15 days prior for any reason you will forfeit $100 of your deposit and the remainder balance will only be refunded in the event your spot is filled. All final payments must be received 30 days prior to the event.

Maximum 4 students – You will get a lot of one-on-one attention. This class is great for advanced students wanting to move on to the next level. We will discuss large scale projects, large scale cuts and I will provide tips and tricks when you start creating these large projects over 9 sq feet. Each student will have a piece of 36″ x 18″ piece of glass. You can have it custom framed in any kind of wood by Dave Wise for an additional cost.
Lodging available at Deer Island Manor just 10 min away. Additional cost is $79 / night for king private room (2 rooms available) or, 8 bunk’s available $50 / night
Lodging includes light breakfast and coffee or tea, Light Lunches will be provided, and students are encouraged to bring healthy snacks or treats to share. Please bring a water bottle and coffee mug with you. Coffee, tea and spring water and lemon will be provided at the studio. Space is limited and return students will get first choice.
Bring a trailer, tent, motor home for no extra charge or rent one of the 2 rooms available.
We will provide a the main dishes for meals and ask that each student bring dishes to share. There will be a menu released two weeks before the event, so you can assist in planning our meals. There will be a barbecue, and a mock kitchen set up outside for everyone to use at any time. This is the second annual event. We will have an enclosed eating area set up. The class will limit out at 10 students and I will have several helpers there through out the event. Facials and massages available on Friday and Saturday, for an additional cost.

We have limited space so as you register and pay your deposit please let us know your sleeping accommodations. Last year we had a outdoor shower set up that worked quite well (we did have some kinks, but this year will not be our first rodeo, so expect a nice shower area.
You can get hotel accommodations or come and go as you want.
If you will be flying in please let us know your flight schedule, so we can assist in transportation to and from the venue.

Kory Dollar is an experienced stained glass mosaic artist with over 20 years experience. “The art of art is the imperfections.” It is her goal to teach how to create a unique one-of-a-kind quality piece of fine art, while encouraging “artistic freedom without self-doubt.” She uses illumination, reflectivity, and texture, to deliver a stunning innovative twist to mosaic art.
